AG withdraws sedition charge against Teresa Kok
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 —The Attorney-General (AG) has dropped a sedition charge against Seputeh MP Teresa Kok over her satirical Chinese New Year video.
The Star Online reported that Kok’s counsel, Sankara Nair, told reporters today that Deputy Public Prosecutor Hamdan Hamzah had informed judge Norsharidah Awang about the prosecution’s decision on Friday.
“All of a sudden the prosecution told the court that the Attorney-General was withdrawing the charge against my client,” Sankara was reported saying.
He added that the defence was taken by surprise by the announcement.
Sankara said the withdrawal was common and that the AG was entitled to do so.
“I hope this (withdrawal) will serve as an example to other sedition cases. I suppose we will wait and see and we have to be optimistic,” he added.
Kok was charged with sedition at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on May 6 last year over her “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014” video.
The Seputeh MP’s 11-minute video clip was posted online on popular video-sharing website YouTube.
